  1. hey all

    I have taking up running again. I am 5 10 , 180 lbs and 29 years old.
I also bought a heart rate monitor to pace myself correctly. I run
    around 20-25 miles a week.

Most websites seem to indicate that the Maximum heart rate for my age
is around 190-194. They recommend that you run at 80 to 85% of your
maximum heart rate which for me would be something like 160 or so.

I typically run at 7 miles / hr. My heart rate at this speed at
170-175. I run my last mile at 8 mile/hr and my heart rate shoots up to
185 sometime 190+ even. Is this abnormal ? Does this mean I am over
exterting myself. Should I slow down ?

    Thanks in Advance.

Since you have a heart rate monitor, you could eliminate the guess work and
test it. Do you have any races planned ?

    No.

    Possibly. It's quite likely.

There are two separate issues -- bumping up the pace on the last mile, and
your pace for the rest of the run. The former is the simplest to address --
if your HR is 190+, you are almost certainly pushing too hard. Stay at
    constant pace.

Now regarding the rest of the workout, and whether you should drop back from
    7mph:

No reason not to. A heart rate of 160 is a reasonable target to shoot for,
*given what you currently know*, and *in the absence of other information*.

For now, I'd suggest dropping back to 6mph. This will probably feel pretty slow
    at first.

    Cheers,
