My dad is big into cycling and competes in triathlons. He has got me interested in getting into the sport. I am a big guy 6'3 285 pounds. I am in fairly decent shape work out 4-5 days a week and run 2 miles after my workouts. My question is is there any road bikes that will handle a person of my size? If so could I get some suggestions? My off day is Friday and I am going to the local shop to look at what they carry. Looking at their website they are dealers for Schwinn, Jamis and Specialized. I am not looking to compete in anything just want to ride with my dad and help me get fit. Thanks for any help.

YES you can find a road bike to fit you. I am 6'3 and I ride a 64cm Fuji Roubaix Pro and it fits Perfect. Go to a bike shop and try one out. I would also take a look at trek and cannondale they make a very large frame. I tested all 3 and the Fuji fit me the best and it was also the best price.

At 285 you'll find wheels and tires to be more of an issue than any other part of the bike. Your local shop should help you select a stock bike with adequate wheels for getting started, or they may build a set for your needs. Look for plenty of spokes (32 or 36 per wheel)and 3-cross lacing front and rear. Use 25mm tires until you can get your weight closer to 200. Good luck.
