im pretty new to bicycling and my friend told me that if i will rub oil on my legs i can keep them hot...
is it true? it it common? is there any special oil for it or anything will do?

thanks! 😄Rubbing oil on your legs will do nothing more than make you think your legs are warm. This is because the "heating oil" doen't enter the muscle, it merely rubs into the layers of the skin. Within your skin lies your chemoreceptors (aka: little nerve ending that sense heat). Your nerve endings send signals of warmth, which in tern causes your body to send blood to the surface to give off heat in an attempt to reduce the temp your nerve endings are sensing...achieving the opposite effect you are looking for.
Research on frostbite has actually shown that "oils" will increase the risk of frostbite, largely due to this false sense of warmth.
Petrolatum products, however, will reduce the amount of heat loss by ~20%.
The products linked to above get you on that one ... 1 & 2 are worthless unless you use #3. Besides, your body will generate far more heat, and in the muscles where you need it, not on your skin, than any oil product will. -
