can someone tell me exactly what the difference is between a Q-factor crank n a non Q-factor crank??

The more Q-factor a crank has the further it angles out from the uni. A crank with less Q will be closer in to the wheel. Q-factor is the distance between the 2 pedals. The more Q you have the more controll (for say trials) you have, but less makes for a smoother ride (for say street).

The q-factor is the distance through the axle between the pedals. Every setup has q-factor--it's just a question of how much.
So, high q-factor means your pedals are farther apart. This can be due to having a wide hub and/or cranks that flare outward.
