I did London-St Malo-Santander 4 years ago. Wonderful... however, if you go South to North you will be against the generally prevailing wind, which will be, literally, a drag. Especially when going through the Medoc.

Thanks for your comments but for various reasons I will have to go South to North. Time is not that much of a problem since I am a teacher and therefore have a long summer break. I would be interested in any tips about the route along the coast and especially that first section in Spain.

Getting around the Pyrenees is not a problem... however, some of the small mountainside villages are worth a trip.
Camp if you can... fresh air, cheap, meet people, etc... choose o 'farmhouse' campsite outside a small town. Avoid 'Camping Municipal' (every town has one) unless you like a family of 12 in a tent watching TV, 3 feet from you.
Stayed at one hotel in Biarritz and was charged to park my bike overnight!
Very few fellow cycle tourers, but fellow cyclists become very friendly as one goes south... the Spanish are great. Those in northern France are about as snooty as US road bikers.
Cars are friendly... cars in Spain yell encouraging things at you and often offer help. One day it rained, and I was feeling quite glum, when a passing bike club decided to draft me 40 miles... I cried.
I pulled a BOB trailer with a Litespeed Tuscany, using a triple, with 12-27 cassette, 23 tyre front, 25 back... worked out wonderfully... lower road drag, lower air drag, lower center of gravity, and packing is a piece of cake. Beats a loaded tourer. Even took it over light trails. I took too much stuff (I always do)... you can do this trip nicely without any cookware... food is cheapish, and easily found.
For reference... other trips have been Seattle-LA, and London-Barcelona. I am 48, and also a teacher. English, living in California. Ride about 90 miles a week, climbing only (about 2,500' four times a week).
Many say they do this route, but, in reality, it seems little travelled... people wave, and say they see very few bike tourists.
