At age 59, and not having ridden a bike for 30 years, my wife and I bought a pair of $69 Huffy bikes at our local Kmart. I soon discovered a love of the air and exercise. And dispite all the words about cheap department store bikes that Huffy 18 speed worked (still does) flawlessly as I averaged over a 1000 miles a year for the last two years. I still use it in crummy weather. The steel components have started to rust pretty bad so I decided I should upgrade a bit. I did much reading and decided I wanted a true hybrid.
Being on a fixed income (downsized/retired) I have a limited budget. I shopped eBay and ultimately purchased a new (2002) Bianchi Bergamo for $275. I received it last week and put it on the road today (finally no snow and some nice mild weather). Wow what a super bike it is. It shifts through all 24 gears like a precision machine. The higher pressure tires enable me (now at age 61) to zip along at 17 mph. It's fantastic.
My old, cheap and reliable Huffy still has a sentimental value to me as it got me off the couch and on the road. Sorry for wasting some bandwith to post this. I am estatic and had to tell someone :-)
