  1. I was reading something in the Parade this last Sunday about a pump (I think they said it was the
Paradigm) that also has the capability of doing continuous BG testing that is supposed to sound an
alarm when you are too high or too low. I scanned the article real quick then set it aside to read
in depth later when I had time. Unfortunately the paper got tossed and when I remembered it had
already been picked up by the garbage truck. I don't know if this is something that is out right now
or something in the works for a later release date. Did anyone else read the article or know what
I'm referring to and, if so, what can you tell me about it? I have a real problem with going low,
have zero symptoms, and would love to get this pump when and if it becomes available.

That's exactly what happened to me. I did scan the article quickly and noticed that it seemed to
contain a number of inaccuracies. It definitely indicated that the pump did continuous BG testing
and automatically corrected insulin dosage on the basis of the readings. I concluded that the auther
probably didn't know what (s)he was talking about.

This is in development by a number of companies. I'm guessing we will hear of a real example by
2006. And there are at least two continuous BG meters close to FDA approval right now. We will
probably be able to purchase one by the end of 2004.

I would be happy just to have the continuous BG meter for now. Pumps, I believe, are a considered a
major improvement in convience and a minor improvement in control. I believe that is the next great
breakthrough in control of type 1 will have to a reliable, continuous form of BG monitoring. This
will allow users to be more aggressive in their daytime control of BG levels, since they no longer
have to worry about hypoglycemia sneaking up. It will also allow for more properly dosed corrections
of impending hypoglycemia, since it will be treated before it happens and the intake of carbs can be
a reduced to a level that causes normal BG levels, instead of highs.
