PT Sensor Install Question: Up and Down?

  1. It is becoming apparent to me that the PT sensor does have a top and bottom.

    I've fiddled with a few different configurations and like this seatstay position but cabling it down the chainstay. But, this requires either a double-back of the cable or placing the sensor in this (see pic) configuration.

    I am experiencing signal drops, and have never before with the sensor pointing the opposite direction (cable exiting up the seatstay).

    Should I change this around? Although nothing in the PT manual says I cannot, it also does not say that I can.

  2. I think your signal drops are caused by the vibration transmitted through the frame to the PT SL receiver. It's not a question of the cable direction, but rather insulating the receiver from the frame. Here's a solution cyclingforums.comshowpost.php, although some have found that certain types of spongy material also works. You should be able to test it on a workstand or trainer. Just get the wheel freewheeling fast to get the pawls screaming -- that should cause signal dropouts.

    I have the supplied foam installed, and it has worked all year on the trainer until I turned it around. I'll replace my hub batteries first, then try to get it flipping around. Your installation has the sensor VERY close to the hub, that may be my problem.

    The signal drops are regardless of pawl vibration, ie: 10 seconds out of every minute on a 20 minute FT effort.

    I doubt it. You can put the bike on a trainer or workstand and remove the receiver from the bike entirely and experiment with the transmission distance. I have a 2nd receiver, so this is easy for me. You'd have to remove some cable ties. I think the transmission distance is not the problem. Chances are that when you changed your installation you tightened the cable ties tighter than they were before. I'm still pretty sure that, unless your batteries are weak, your problem is vibration. But, there's a very simple way to test it. Put the bike on a trainer with your current installation and get the hub spinning until you get dropouts. Then, unclip the receiver from the stay and position it completely free of the frame (e.g., have someone hand-hold it in place) and see if you still get dropouts. If not, then the problem was vibration transmission through the frame. If you still get dropouts, then you have another problem.
