FWIW out there in the 2 wheeled purveyors of pain caves-
Finally got a low mileage campy record drivetrain to 'behave' like it should- took Peter's advice and looked into Jagwire...came across their 'Ripcord' line and it actually looks like black fishing leader wire...it is coated in black teflon. Made a vast difference in the drivetrain shifting performance (for the better!) and we'll see how long the teflon holds out b/f I need to restring it. Will keep this thread updated with restring date....
