Proper shoe fit

Just finally found a pair of Asics Gel Cumulus IV with sizing of 2E. I've typically been wearing 9
1/2 or 10 sized. I got a size 10, tried it on, and got them because they did feel good - I was more
concerned with width in trying them on than anything because it's so hard to find 2E locally. The
sales lady measured my foot and said it was a size 9, which surprised me - I've never wore 9. She
mentioned a size 10 in Asics would be good because they tend to run a size small. So, I got them
home and I'm just wondering if maybe they are too big length wise. I know you should have at least a
thumb-widths space between the big toe and the end of the shoe. I have that and a bit more - there
is a decent amount of extra space from my other toes to the end of the shoe. I guess I'm wondering
if I should keep these or get something a bit more snug? My right foot is sensitive - if the shoe is
too tight then it aches for some reason on the side. I will go tmw and try a 9
1/2, but just curious if this is a common situation - having that much space at the end of
the foot??

The main things to watch for are a loose heel, and having the foot slide around inside the toe
box (which could cause blisters) It actually sounds like you've got a decent fit IMO. If you have
any doubts, take them for a spin on a treadmill (so you don't get them dirty). The only way to
come close to knowing is to do 5 miles in them, and the only way to *really* know is put 100
miles on them (-;

Having said that, running shoes all run at least half a size small compared to other shoes.

She was correct in that most running shoes run small. I sure don't know why, but they do. Only time
will tell if she was right about how much. Hopefully she and you in the process of fitting checked
that. Never rely on just the marked size.

See if you can take the new shoes to a gym and run indoors on the treadmill for about 3 miles. That
should give you an idea of whether the fit is adequate, and then you can return them if it's not.

Stand on an incline, like 20 degrees or so, and see if they still have space at the end. Most
running and outdoor shoe stores where I am have these for people to stand on (space for a couple
small steps) when trying on new shoes. REI even has a cute little fake rock setup around theirs so
you can test footing on irregular surfaces ;)
