I am 25 male 163lbs. high b/p controlled with beat-blocker. I have a problem not keeping hydrated. I drink fluids left and right before I ride, during, and after. I assume I drink enough b/c I go to the bathroom every 15 mins. When I ride or do any other strenous activity in the heat I get fatiged, dizzy, sometimes nausated, loss of apitite, and very hot. I dont ride far ~ 10 hilly miles. I am new to cycling. I can drink fluids after the ride and seem to be dehydrated as it take a lot of fluid to urinate. I thought maybe a caloric intake problem with the dizzy and fatique but I eat like a horse. I have done well with endurance being on beta-blockers but if I take a week off it's like I haven't excercised before. Also my heart rate gets high and I get tired very quickly then it settles down then I can go for a while, well used to when training hard. Need to warm up more? Any suggestions would help!!

if you're taking meds for high BP and you want to cycle, I'd recommend telling your doctor about your plans before going back out on the road again. I don't know about your hydration problems (it took me several months before I found out what works for me: 1 pint H20 an hour before, slug of H20 every 15 minutes during, and another pint immediately after) but i'd be more concerned with strenuous exercise and high BP more than how much water you drink right now. it could also be that you're just plain ole "outta shape". that's my two cents worth. good luck. 🙂

I'm a advid runner long before I took up cycling and I have seen situations like this before as a marathoner. The hydrating method you described above is a good way to develop hyponatremia, "a condition cause by overhydration while excersiing dilutes the sodium level in your body." YOU CAN DIE FROM IT. Some of the syptoms of hyponatremia is nausia, fatigue and dizziness. There's some new development in clinical research on proper hydration. I think there's an article in the Oct. Runner's mag about it. Check it out.
I also second the opion to talk to your doctor if he is not aware of your excercising activities. I'm no doctor, but if I have hypertension or high blood pressure, I'll want to get it under control before I stress my systems. I dont know your excercise history; but reguardless, several things you mentioned are red flags to me. I highly encourage you to talk to your doctor and then find yourself a "certified" trainer after he say it's OK.
A simple test. What color is your urine? If any more color than that of straw, then you are dehydrating. If you have to pee every 15 min., then you are overdoing it pre-activity. As the previous poster noted, hyponatremia can happen, especially in someone who sweats heavily and drinks excessive water.
Before your next activity, weigh yourself before and after. If you have gained weight which I highly doubt, back off on your hydration. During your training, try to take around 50-80% of what you expect to lose from previous measurements, whatever your GI system will tolerate. I have the same issues in that I struggle to stay hydrated and quite frequently vommit after races. I am working on it...........🙄
Thanks for the info. My b/p is well undercontrol with meds and my doctor knows about my excercise so she doesn't think I should limit my excercise. I will have to start weighing myself.
