CAMERAS NOT JUST MEANS OF RAISING REVENUE

Mr Charlson's recent claim that speed cameras are simply a means of
raising revenue is nonsense.
The Treasury receives an average of less than 50p per year for each
driver in the UK from the nation's safety camera schemes.
Mr Charlson implies that cyclists shouldn't criticise speeding drivers
because they don't pay road tax. However, there is no law against
protesting when one's life is put at risk by the selfish actions of
others.
In reality there is no such thing as road tax, only a motor vehicle
licence fee based on the amount of carbon dioxide emitted. Cyclists
are also taxpayers and most are also car owners.
Anyone who cycles rather than using a car is helping reduce pollution,
noise, congestion, parking problems and the huge burden placed on the
NHS by diseases such as diabetes, some cancers and heart disease.
Cyclists also pose minimal risk to the safety of others, unlike the
users of motor vehicles.
Drivers should just be thankful that they don't have to pay the true
cost their car use imposes on society.
