I recently bought a tube for my bike and tried replacing the tube but when I inserted the tube the valve wouldn't fit the little hole in the bike rim, does anyone know what i did wrong here or do I need a tube with a presta valve ?

yea
presta is the small skinny oneDepending on the wheel type, you can make a presta hole bigger to fit a shrader.
My bro in law does that, he broke a threded presta off once, thinks they are too flimsy. & he uses the none threaded presta on his road bike.
