It was a beautiful morning here in southern New Jersey. The clouds were
breaking up and there was just a slight chill in the area. I met up
with Jeff, Mike, Steve, and Dino for a pre-turkey ride in the pine
barrens (Batona). The smell of freshly fallen pine needles filled the
air as we slid into the turns over the fallen leaves. It was a little
slick, but the singlespeed held it's ground as we rolled over the
hardened sandy singletrack up and down the small rolling hills. Jeff
decided to be a wise ass as I was riding his wheel (I have a tendency to
do that - a throw back from the days when I used to get dropped). He
slammed on his brake, causing me to slam on mine resulting in an endo.
If that wasn't bad enough, the two riders behind me also endoed
resulting in a four bike pile up.
After the boardwalk over the marshy stuff, we stopped at Pakim Pond to
contemplate doing the extra mileage. What the heck, we're going to
stuff ourselves with turkey anyway, so another 10 miles of singletrack
will give us some extra room in the belly. So we hit the Mount Misery
trail (all 250' of altitude) and double time it back to the car. Twenty
six miles of beautiful singletrack in under three hours and Turkey
waiting for me to carve when I got home. I couldn't think of a better
Thanksgiving Day.
