What is the deal?

Every year the same models are getting more expensive.

This is absolutely ridiculous. I paid $725 for a brand new pro model complete wheel system, about 3 years ago. Now it costs $700 for just the HUB of the BASE powertap model!!!!

WTF.

I blame it on all you idiots out there paying these prices. Same goes for these wheelsets. Mavic cosmic carbones cost half what of they cost now, back in 2001 or so.

Why are bike riders willing to continually pay more and more each year for bike stuff?

This is outragous. Look at the component systems too.

Prices should be going DOWN, with improved technology and advances.

FOOLS you are to pay like this.

The price on the Power Tap has gone down since they were introduced, at least in the UK...

It's always more expensive to purchase a single item of a group (i.e., the hub versus the whole kit) no matter whether it is bike related or not.

Would be good to see prices come down a bit further, which would encourage more people to buy them which could result in a virtuous circle of lower prices for consumers and higher profits for the manufacturers.

Suggest you shop around and do some research. The first web site I found of a US distributor of the PT Pro (hub only) has it at a list price of US$550.

cool, thanks.
yeh, my bad.
http://www.e4bike.com/
PT Pro hub at US$529.95 including free worldwide shipping.
Whether or not they're reliable I have no idea but no need to spend a zillion to get a PT

Just bought mine from Wiredbike.com this morning for $US 1099.99 (which equates to $AU 1,385) compared to to the $AU 2,199 the local dealer here in Sydney is asking

What did you get for that?

The usual stuff - computer, hub, heart rate chest strap, receiver with cadence sensor, mounting hardware, software etc. Most sites I checked had the SL hub plus all the bits and pieces at around the $1,199 mark and the hub only at around $850

Cool thing is that when I ordered it this morning, it was marked down from $1,199 to $1,099 and when I checked again this afternoon, the price had gone back up to $1,199 :)

More than likely a Mavic Open Pro 'cos it looks like the best option for a training/racing rim ;)

Just to hi-jack the thread for a moment, but I've downloaded the SL manual and I'm not clear on a few things

If I set the recording rate to 1 second then that will give me around 7 hours data storage ?

Also, what rate of display do you use for power, speed etc - I was thinking maybe 5 seconds ?

7 hours at 1.26 sec recording rate - 15 hrs on some models of CPU I think.

I use 5 second averaging for power display (some like 3) and no averaging for anything else.

What PM were you using before? SRM? Why the PT?

I was using the Polar unit, which I managed to get working fairly well on the trainer, except for 1 or 2 gears :( but after a myriad of problems with the 2 units I have, I've just been continually frustrated with their lack of reliability  (one just stops working for no apparent reason and the other, which I have on my training bike at the moment, will ONLY work on the trainer for some bizarre reason  )

It's come to a head these past 2 weeks 'cos our Club 'celebrates' the Uncle Fester (our Club Patron) Month of Madness

Basically, from the 22 Dec 06 until 22 Jan 07, Uncle Fester, and anyone who's silly enough to ride with him, will complete a minimum of 100km per day for the entire month - a GREAT way to establish a good base ;)

I'm working on 5 days 'on' the Month of Madness and 2 days 'off' - read solo recovery and trainer rides.

Without a reliable PM, gauging effort, recovery etc etc is just too haphazard :(

Basically, I've just become really p$^^*$ off with the Polar unit (despite an upcoming upgrade (the CS600) which I'm already seeing as a 'cosmetic' fix), and I've set myself some fairly tough targets for this season and I absolutely NEED reliable equipment to achieve these goals.

I've been on this forum for quite a while now, and appreciate that the SL is probably the best 'bang for your buck $$' at present SO...................the SL was ordered this morning.

Apologies for the 'long winded' response but after 2 very long weeks (still haven't finished this one  ) I'm a little 'frazzled' but hanging in there - if you feel the need, come over and join us on a ride next week ;) - just check out http://pelotonsports.turramurracyclery.com.au/default.aspx for where we're going each day (we decide over the previous day's coffee) :D Just look for anything that's titled 'MOM'

Upon further review, those prices are still high. I got a complete new powertap pro wheel system 3 years ago on ebay for $700. Prices have definitely risen since.

Well sounds like you'll just have to "Ride Commando".....;)
