I'm going through the process of 'uniqueifying' the MTB (I want a new one but can't afford it) and need to hear from experience - will XC rip powdercoating to pieces? Should I powdercoat and then finish with a couple of coats of clear 2pack?? Should I just 2pack paint the whole thing???

Just go the powdercoat. Unless you want decals, stickers etc over the color, then clear coat is good for extra protection.
