  1. My wife and I are considering a move to the Observatory Hill neighborhood in Pittsburgh. Now, I would like to continue using a bike for my primary transportation... the problem is the road surface and the hills. Somehow I think that my current road bike would be a poor match for Pittsburgh riding conditions (cobblestone and potholes on 30% grades.)

What I need is recomendations for a good Pittsburgh friendly bike:

I need eyelets for racks and fenders, a tripple chainring with a serious granny gear for hills.

As light as possble for dragging up the hills (without involving carbon). Weight is especially critical to make up for the extra weight of racks and pannier bags.

Enough frame clearance for fenders and slightly wider tires (I'm used to 700x20C which I somehow doubt would stand up to the kind of abuse that pittsburgh's roads would inflict)

Need to be able to shift without taking my hands off the drops (which I can't do with Shimano Sora on my current bike). I have enough trouble with hills without having to let go of the bar to shift.

Anyone riding in Pittsburgh, what are your suggestions?????

  2. Welcome to Pittsburgh :-) I'm currently going to college in New York, but I've lived in Pittsburgh for my whole life and it's a great riding town. Those hills made me more in shape than many of the "more serious" bikers up here in Ithaca.

As far as which bike to buy, I can't think of anything specific ... I've always used my mountain bike (with road tires) for road riding. My dad's road bike is a regular Trek touring bike (comperable to the current Trek 520) which has worked well for him for the past 10 years or so. The hills can be a huge pain, but I've found that with enough conditioning, you can make it up them on any kind of bike (mine's an old, heavy, steel-framed mountain bike and I manage to make it up even the steepest hills).

I guess if I had to make a suggestion, I'd say keep the road bike you have and buy a mountain bike outfitted with road tires (or some kind of hybrid road/mountain bike) for the really messy roads (like cobblestone ones). I hope this helped ... and enjoy Pittsburgh if you do end up moving there :-)
