Those social concerns are reflected in the Senate's looming debate over a Ho
use-passed bill to force taxpayers to fund stem cell research that would des
troy human embryos, legislation that Bush has promised to veto. Bush and man
y fellow conservatives believe it is immoral to create embryos only to destr
oy them, even in the name of scientific progress that could cure or treat di
seases afflicting millions of people.
"I appreciate that," I said. "But Carl, you don't even know me. I've worked
here for five years, and every other time we've spoken, it was in meetings,
about our clients and how we were going to package them. And that wasn't tha
t often."
