[font=Times New Roman]I just received a new wheel under warranty and noticed the weld had at least one sharp point that would have caused a puncture on first inflation. The overall weld was rather poor and so when cleaning up the offending burr I decided to take the roughness off the overall weld. Unfortunately I’m now concerned that I may have worn away part of the rim hook in this area. The inside of the hook (closest to the hub) seems to be pretty good but wondering how much damage the hook can sustain before compromising bead containment.[/font]

I'm surprised that you did the work yourself and just didn't bring the wheel back to the shop and look for a replacement. I generally go over new rims and sand paper out any suspect spots but what describe seems more than what normally would be expected. That said you did not say how big an area of the lip or hook you damaged. I can't say I'm an expert on such things but there are a lot of factors. Some tires have a larger bead than others and the bead is made of various materials. A very light weight foldable tire would be most problematic if the damaged area was large enough. It has been my experience that same type of tire also will stretch a little over its life. I found they become easier to mount as they wear. A thicker wire beaded tire I would imagine would be less likely to cause a problem. Also remember that once it is properly inflated that there is generally very little movement and any movement would generally be toward the hub not away in normal rotation. Is there a possibility that it could come off? Absolutely but the area of damage would have to be large and perhaps a lot of laterial pressure would need to be applied. Worse case scenario might be a serpentine down hill with poor road conditions. So can you cause it to come of yourself after its inflated by pulling on the tire? If not then ride it gingerly until your confidence in it is established. If as I suspect the area of damage is only 2-3 cm than I wouldn't worry to much there sould be plenty of support.

I travel a great deal for work and the shop I purchased the bike from is 10,000km from here in LAX, while I live in Sydney, Australia. I'm over there often but every time I check in a component like a wheel with the baggage services I suspect it will come out a different shape to when it went in.
