Hello,
I am restoring a Gary Fisher Aquila from probably the mid-
90's. I have an XT top-pull for it and have installed it. I
am looking at where the cable guide is on the frame and
where the lever is on the front derailleur and it looks like
there will be a very steep angle between the lever and the
braze on. I took a second look at the old beater derailleur
that came off the bike originally and it is indeed a top
pull but the lever is "behind" the derailleur mechanism
which is more in line with where the guide is on the frame;
directly in the center of the seat tube in the rear. So it
looks like even though I have a top pull, I need a top-rear
pull for this to work properly, else it looks like it might
either wear out the cable guide, or fray the cable or
perhaps both! Are there any solutions to this out there or
is this a perfectly normal way to run a front derailleur?
If I could move the guide from the rear of the seat tube to
the right side of it, I think I could fix the problem for
the most part. Are there any clamp-on cable guides out there
for bikes? Can I even find a front derailleur that is a top-
rear pull anymore? WIll I have to modify this frame by
having a guide welded to it?
