Nathan started sixth-form college yesterday, at Fakenham. This morning he had a
chat with the college head about his need for showering facilities, storage of
cycling wear and *secure* storage of his bike on campus, as Nathan's normal
means of travel is his bike. Nathan has been given keys to shower and locker
facilities so he doesn't have to ask a member of staff to be let in every
morning, and a suitable *secure* locking point was found. Nathan was really
pleased that there was absolutely no hassle in this, which contrasts strongly
with his previous school where he was told by a member of staff that if he
wanted to keep his cycle helmet inside, she had to know in advance which days
he'd be cycling into school as it was a lot of hassle to allow him to keep his
helmet in a cupboard in the classroom... Nathan said that it's really nice to
be treated as a human being :-)

I have two boys at the mentioned "previous" school; and I would agree -
sports in general do not feature highly in their priorities. The bike
sheds are rusting away, and surrounded by smelly bins that are always
overflowing everywhere.

I cycled to the summer concert before the hols - the only parent to do
so; my doing so was remarked upon by several other parents. The fact
that this was at all notable is very sad.

Anyway - refreshing attitude from Fakenham; Top Marks!

At Fakenham there are some rusty bike sheds, similar to those at "previous",
but Nathan doesn't have to keep his bike there. He can use an on campus
railing, within sight of staff offices that are in daily use, that allows him
to use his D-lock to lock the frame to the railing, as well as his couple of
cable locks. Not as ideal as a brand-new weather-proof shelter with Sheffield
stands, but much better than rusty sheds where the bike has to have its wheel
lodged in a rusting thing that wrecks wheels and doesn't actually allow secure
locking as per terms of insurance. So full-marks for getting the best place on
offer sorted with no hassle about it.

Whenever vernon and/or I cycled with Nathan, there were raised eyebrows and
comments from any staff on duty at the gate.

Indeed. I'll keep you updated on how attitudes progress at Fakenham, in case
there is a consideration for your offspring post Y11 :-)
