Polar HRM Failure

Changed the battery in my S610 yesterday and I now get the dreaded "Memory Failed" message. I tried using the reset and shorting the power supply out but no success. Anyone else managed to revive their watch or is it back to Polar for repair (watch is six years old), if so how much, might be better to get a newer model.
