I was cycling into town this morning when at the base of what was my personal
Alpe-d'huez/north face of the Eiger when I first got back on the bike I spotted
a couple of cyclists stopped and rooting about their bikes. So being a
considerate sort, I stopped and asked if everything was okay and if they needed
any assistance. I carry a lote of basic stuff with me and if they had a problem
that was beyond me or them solving with my basic toolkit, I could always phone
home and get the personal bike mechanic to come out to assist ;-) Who says
roadies aren't friendly!
As it turned out, I didn't need to call out my personal bike mechanic as the
couple were fine, just sorting out the stuff on the racks on their bikes. We
started chatting and turns out they were a retired couple from Pickering in
Yorks down here on holiday for a few days and they were combining walking and
cycling around Norfolk. Their bikes were a couple of folders they'd brought for
ease of transport in the boot of their car. Back home in Pickering the man (who
was in his 70s) had a "proper bike" and this was his first time on a
small-wheeler. We chatted about the weather, cycling, the forthcoming York
Rally, which they'll be attending.
A little later, I pulled up outside the post office to send off a small
package, and the couple were sitting on a bench there. The lady said she
noticed I got up the hill without having to stop :-) We laughed, had another
short chat and then I went on my way. Hopefully I've given them a pleasant
impression of friendly cyclists in Norfolk!
Cheers, helen s
