Five days ago my wife gave birth (vaginally) to our baby girl. After the birth of our daughter the placenta did not deliver and the OB had to go up after it. They said that it appeared to be hung up at the fundus. After about 5 entries through my wife's vagina the OB felt that they got it all. 🙁
The OB said that there is little concern of retained fragments but said to watch my wife for signs of sickness such as cramping, nausea and high fever. Unfortunately we are told that breast feeding will generate the same symptoms. Sure enough my wife has a low fever (100.4*F) with cramping (probably uterus contracting to normal size) and a bit of nausea.
I would appreciate any advice that anyone could give me as to anything to look out for and for how long we will be "in the woods." Additionally, are there any test that can be done to see if there are retained fragments?
Thank you for your help and please respond to the group.

Not a doctor, but have had a retained placental fragment; the symptoms (and it took until the piece was expelled to realize what it was) were bleeding and limited (absence of?) milk. I had no fever or appreciable nausea that I can recall, though given the pregancy ended in my middle son's death, I was really out of it.

I don't know of a test; D&C is the treatment I remember.
