Well, Treks and Cannondales (along with Giant and Specialized) are just particularly popular in the states--they've marketed themselves very succesfully, managed strong endorsements, and they're selling good stuff to boot. That said, the global market is much wider, and there are dozens of large French, Italian, German, Australian, Canadian and Spanish bike companies (Pinarello, Colnago, Willier, Time, Orbea, Look, Bianchi, and on and on) selling great stuff, along with plenty of smaller North American houses which do quite well.

Pinarello is one of those higher-shelf Italian companies which, along with DeRosa and Colnago, has a lot of international appeal, and a lot of representation in the race scene domestically and abroad.

Don't worry, all those guys riding the cannondales and treks were wishing they were on a pinarello.

In the group I ride with, I own the only Trek, Pinarello's Prince, Look (396, 486) and De Rosa King arround (mostly Pinarellos)

I wish i had a Colnago, but the most important thing it's making the Trek to cross the line at the front.

You made a great choice picking the Pinarello. Which model do you ride?
