  1. I had bypass surgery on December 23, 2003 (3 months ago). My
doctor said nothing about physical rehab but my friends and
relatives who have had bypass surgery keep telling me that
physical rehab is very important. I am 62 and did not have a
heart attack. Reason for surgery: a treadmill stress test
indicated poor circulation to the lower part of my heart.

Two months after bypass surgery, I had another treadmill
stress test by a local cardiologist and it showed a small
black area in the back of my heart and the nurse told me it
indicates insufficient circulation on the back side of my
heart. I guess I am supposed to call my doctor for a follow
up appointment. Should I inquire about physical rehab?

I think yes, after you figure out what is going on with your
heart. Why is there an area not getting enough blood flow
and what should you do about it? Is this the area that was
bypassed, did it not take, etc. I would talk to the
cardiologist who did the test about this and ask about rehab
at the same time. You can call him or her.

I did not have a bypass but rather an angioplasty. I started
a cardiac rehab program after that. I think it was a life
saver because it got me started on a program of regular
exercise. I had never done anything like that before.
