Phelps has an interesting choice to make now for next year's OG. Should he try to maximize his performances and just go for the fly and IM events, or maybe he should try the 200 back as well? He could very well beat Piersol in that race and take home 5 individual golds, and possibly 3 relay golds if he swam the 4x100M free relay and the US team improved to an average of 1:44-1:47 for each 200 of the 4x200 relay. Very tough to do, but 8 golds for Phelps are possible, albeit remotely.

"You gotta dance with who you brung" (I.E. Phelps is a Fly'er and an I.M.er)
He hasn't done anything in the Olympics yet. I wouldn't mess around if I were him. 100/200 Fly, 200/400 I.M. 100 Fly on the relay team. That's five gold medals that are certainly achievable given his performance at Worlds.

He wants to be part of the sprint relay. However, that event and the 400IM are held the same evening.

This 'problem' has never prevented Ian Thorpe from doing it since 1999 Pan Pacs, and he has anchored Australia since then to a commonwealth gold, two Pan Pacs Championships and an Olympic gold in world record (after swimming his own 400 free WR). So, maybe Phelps would take up the challenge ?
