Roadside Stage 8: Learning the press ropes at the Tour is no easy task, and often takes years to achieve a passable level of fluency of “tour Journo”. Photog Beardy McBeard remains undaunted by the daily challenges of shooting fantastic photos, and may even meet a friendly gendarme before this Tour is over.-Photos & Words by Marcus Enno –How can 2km turn into 20km? Easy, stay in a hotel near the start and have a well deserved sleep in after a long night of editing. On the first turn out of the hotel we hit a ‘Route Barree’. We flashed our passes but no good, so we took the long way round getting to the start 45 minutes later than intended.The press parking was in an underground car park accessed by a single lane street. Anticipating the traffic chaos this was going to cause we decide just to get started driving the route.The first location crept up on us as I was checking live race updates on the phone, I looked up and there it was. A scene of town complete with church spire on a hill with a dramatic sky behind.All we needed was somewhere to pull over. There wasn’t anywhere, down the hill and round the corner there was finally a place and we pulled in.It was a bit of a hike back up to the spot and by the time I got there another photographer had arrived.
