Race Report: A big sprint was expected in Genova, but who would take the honors? One of the ‘old guard’ maybe: Greipel or Petacchi. In the end it was a battle between two young guns with Elia Viviani edging out Moreno Hofland. Michael Matthews moved into the overall lead.A day of a long break, crashes and three new jersey wearers came down to a crazy sprint on the streets of Genova. Sky’s Elia Viviani won by a wheel from Moreno Hofland (LottoNL-Jumbo), both out-distanced Andr Greipel (Lotto Soudal) and all the others. Michael Matthews was 7th and the Pink Jersey moved to his shoulders from his teammate Simon Gerrans.May the force be with you!Stage 2 route:There is a short unclassified climb just after the start in Albenga and an early break is expected to form around that point. There is one climb, the Cat 4 Prato Zanino (120K); this will see the first KOM jersey on the podium. Apart from that the course is fairly flat to the finish in Genova and is expected to come down to a sprint after 177 kilometers. There is a finishing circuit of 9.6 kilometers and the race will pass the finish line twice before the last battle.Fast actionThe break formed very early and it included: Lukasz Owsian (CCC Sprandi Polkowice), Giacomo Berlato (Nippo-Vini Fantini), Eugert Zhupa (Southeast), Bert-Jan Lindeman (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Marco Frapporti (Androni-Sidermec).
