Four Sky riders came back for Porte, but as the commissars left a gap between the peloton and the cars (known in the trade as a ‘barrage’), Porte lost 47 seconds which meant he was at 1:09 to Alberto Contador on the overall standing. After the stage, the commissars jury also fined the two riders 200 Swiss Francs and penalized them two minutes, Porte now dropped to 12th overall at 3:09. Sky boss, David Brailsford, said: It just goes to show you that you can either live by the letter of the law or the spirit of the law. The law is the law and Brailsford will have to accept that.
