Hi, I've been lurking around here for a while, since I began cycling,
and thought now would be an opportune time to introduce myself. I just
finished my first large cycling event (www.greatbikeride.com.au). I've
been commuting to work 4-5 times a week for a couple of months but the
furthest I had ever gone in a day was around 20km (8km to and from work
and maybe a trip up to the markets and back). This event was 53km all
up, not huge, but quite an effort for me🙂 I was pretty happy to finish
in dead on 2 hours, not too much slacking off. It was a great day for
it too, we started in lots of 50 from 7am (I was out at 7:27 to be
precise) so the heat wasn't too bad and there was a wonderful tail wind
for the first leg to Fremantle (of course I was not so fortunate for
the return in the opposite direction.) Best of all were all the
volunteer marshals keeping the cars at bay at all intersections, it was
fantastic to ride so far without having to stop and undo the clips,
although I came fairly close on the one really mighty hill. A great
ride for my first 'event' anyway, riding through the finish was
exhilarating - some people even clapped, although they were mainly
volunteers🙂

but Ihave been clapped by fellow cyclists at the summit of two nasty

you haven't already walked under one next week?

When I did the Etape du Tour in 1994 the route was on the day before the
Tour covered the same roads so there was a large crowd lining the climbs.
The applause, the drinks being handed up and the odd push helped me get from
La Mongie to the Col du Tourmalet.
