A further comment about this. It reflects what can be a
somewhat unsavory feature of alternative medicine , and that
is an exaggerated focus upon the perspective of the self.
That has a certain validity even when at its most self-
contained. But medicine is a profession with much wider
responsibilities. It is supposed to house a body of
knowledge that is useful to all, and which is solid enough
to build upon from generation to generation.
Alternative supporters often ignore this perspective.. So
long as it "works" for me; who cares whether it will work
for others? Medicine feels it needs to know what it truly
means when someone says a treatment "works", what the
implications of such statements are for others, and what
they mean for the advancement of medical knowledge..
Medicine has also always had a strong public health
perspective, ever since the Romans recognized that
building settlements on marshes favored malaria, and
probably long before.
When the well on the High St of Chipping Camden was
recognized as the source of all the typhoid and was sealed
over, alternative supporters who thought they escaped the
disease through the ingenious use of natural remedies would
have been marching in the streets with banners: "save our
well".. Never mind any who might lack that knowledge, or who
were too old, young or weak to fight off the disease.
