I went shopping at my favorite thrift store on Saturday. I'm a big fan
of thift and consignment stores. My new, small wardrobe of size 6 and
8 clothes has been built, one piece at time from the thrifts. It's
such a great way to buy designer clothes. Almost like shopping at an
exclusive store ala Lilly Rubin! You see, someone has gone to the time
and trouble to do my pre-shopping, and all I need to do is pick
through the selection and find exactly what I like. If you like
labels, you'll love the clothes at the local thrift shops........most
of them found for pennies on the dollar. (Of course, many of them need
some minor repair and ALL need a good thorough cleaning, but that's
par for the course.)
Anyway, I stopped into the Salvation Army on Saturday and there
awaiting me was a collection shorts and tops from Lily Pulizer, shirts
from Polo and more. Size 6. I tried them on. Perfect fit! Two big bags
for under $20. The clerk said the staff had been speculating who was
going to be tiny enough to wear this new stuff, since many people had
looked at the clothes but so far no one could fit into them.
Her comment floored me. In my head I am not tiny. Duffy and tiny don't
mix. Yes I am a size 6. But I see myself as moderately big. I still
"see" myself as the the size 16-18 Duffy I was when I started
low-carbing, way back when. In fact, when I shop I automatically start
at the XL's and work down. Old habits are hard to break.
Still, I guess I am smaller than I think. And there was no magic how I
got here. It was low carb and exercise, plain and simple. I'm a
purist. I don't eat much processed food and I haven't jumped on the
net carb bandwagon. That's just me.
Folks, no matter how I perceive myself, the scale says 123. So the
whole point of this ramble is don't give up. Stick with it. Because
shopping for 6's and 8's is a hoot. Maybe I don't see myself looking
as thin as I am, but I know from the size of my clothes that I must be
reasonably small.
I'm not going back. Ever.
