I've now rigged up a Pedal & Power (from IKON Global) to my
SON dynamo hub. I'm quite impressed with the ability to
charge my mobile phone, since it's managed to charge from
about 3/4 charge (guaged by the battery guage on the phone)
to fully charged. As the phone lasts about a week on a full
charge that's rather good. That was over 4.5 miles of my
morning commute, I stopped charging and put the phone and
adaptor away once it started to rain.
I also replaced my front light (Lumotec N Plus) as the
contacts had become dodgy at not much more than 18 months
age. The replacement is the Schmidt E6 which seems to be a
much better light. I rigged up a 3 way double throw switch
(on-off-on) to select between light, neither, or the Pedal &
Power. It's then in a small box from Maplin to keep it all
neat and tidy, though it still manages to be a bit Heath
Robinson; the box is currently taped to the right fork
blade. I put a Minours Space Grip on to carry the phone
cradle, which fits my phone nicely.
I am thinking of re-working it all to be a bit more tidy,
perhaps by re-jigging the wiring so that the switching is at
the back (under the saddle?) with the frame used to provide
the earth side of the circuit. This would make it all a bit
neater and tidier, particularly if I can wire it all using a
single 3-core cable to carry the power from the dynamo to
the switch and then back to the charger and to the lamp.
All in all, I'm reasonably pleased so far.
