Has anyone done the Parry Sound Half Ironman in Ontario, Canada? I'm thinking about doing it for my first Half, but I'm a little concerned about how hilly it may be.
They describe the bike as rolling hills, which sounds okay since I have lots of hills where I live to train on. they say that the first 2K of the run is flat and then it goes into the hills for 6 or 7K, then back to flat for 2K, and then you do it all over again. I'm wondering how big the hills are on the run.
I do train on hills during my runs, but I wouldn't want anything too big for the run in my first Half.

Did it last year and was my favourite half to date. The bike was quite nice, and yeah it is rolling but not that bad at all. I came off the bike feeling pretty refreshed. And that was at a pedestrian 2:45 bike split. The run is tough. The hills aren't mountain size by any means 😉 but they are steep in some sections but relatively short in length. What would you consider too big? They are defintely doable by anyone. They weren't race ending in my opinion. You will enjoy it that's for sure. Mark

Thanks Mark,
Sounds like it could be fun. I guess that I was hoping the run wouldn't have five kilometers of steep hills over a hundred feet high in succession. I like a course with some hills, it breaks up the run, and you can't have downhills without uphills. 🙂
I think I'll sign up! I was checking out other Half IM races and most of them are pretty darn expensive. The Parry sound race is only $80 Canadian. Plus I can drive there in one long day.

Bob,
Not sure if you have a family but we stayed at Kilbear Provincial park last year and it was GREAT!!! It's about a 20-30 minute drive from the race site but it was so relaxing and the weather was awesome. Well except for race day when it poured rain, however, I love racing in the rain so it was a bonus for me. And no, the hills are nothing as you describe. 🙂 Good luck and look forward to your race report! I still have to write mine from last year! Mark
