Someone I know did one of the Paps a couple of years ago. They didn't
really like the experience as the surface was very loose and unstable.

Many years ago we spent a week on Islay at Port Askaig, from where there was
a ferry across to Jura. We went across one day (without the car) and did one
of the Paps from there.My main interest was the wreck of a Royal Navy
Barracuda which lay on the col between Beinn a'Chaolais and Beinn an Oir.
My recollection was that Jura is WET (boggy!) but certainly wild. The West
coast is totally uninhabited but difficult of access, except by boat.
There's certainly more to to see and do on Islay.

You probably know this but at an isolated cottage in the north of Jura,
(Barnhill) George Orwell wrote 1984.

I have been across to the Paps of Jura on two occasions. The first
time I stayed at Port Askaig and took the ferry across and climbed
Beinn an Oir and got the ferry back later that day. It was in a
November or December so I had to watch the ferry timetable.

The second occasion I stayed with friends in a cottage at Craighouse
and spent a few days there climbing all the Paps ant--clockwise.
There were several people camped outside the Isle of Jura Hotel and
using the Hotel facilities. There is a bus service that runs from
Feolin Ferry to Craighouse but you need to phone the company. If you
time it when the school kids are using the ferry there should be no
problem getting on the bus but I would check with the company first.

We did the "stay on Islay, get the boat across" thing. We had bikes
with us (nothing special, I had a Brompton folder with wee wheels and
Roos used her usual commuter hybrid) which made the "walk in" very much
quicker and easier.

Depends what you class as your idea of enjoyable. If it has to be
Proper Mountains, probably not, if it's just exploring wild space then
plenty, especially if you're counting it as Islay/Jura. We spent a
wonderful day walking along the cost of Islay from Bunnerhabhain, for
example.
If you happen to enjoy whisky, or are willing to experiment with it,
that's something for the rainy days...

We just did the one for various reasons, but I really liked it. Steep
stuff, but the descent was mainly scree of the enjoyable kind and the
views are awesome. I'll certainly be back to do the other (or probably
both on a oner) at some point.
