  1. Asked this on rec.bikes.ride but got little response.

What's the best (hardest) road route to take on Palomar Mtn (Calif.) and what is the best way to get
    there from San Diego?

    Thx, Ronde Chimp

The local pros do this thing called "The Loop".

Go from wherever you are to Lake Hodges. Up that to Lake Wohlford. Down to Pauma Valley, take 76
right, start climbing. Climb South Grade at the fork. Descend East Grade at the top, take a left on
76, heading east again. Right on Mesa Grande Road. Follow that till it dead ends on 79, take a right
to Santa Isabel. 67? back to Ramona, Back to Hodges on Highland Valley Road.

A couple of the guys have got their fat burning so efficient that this ride has been managed on a
Snickers and a Coke (and water) at 18mph, solo.

I'd guess 12,000-15,000 ft. of climbing, 120-140 miles, depending on where you start.

The most it's been managed in one week is three times.

Have fun, do it regularly and you can't help but get fast.

Dude, do you realize that you are so obsessed with food and fat that you can't even give a guy
    *directions* without bringing them up?

    He wanted the "hardest".

That's the hardest I've heard of. And no, I never did The Loop eating very little like those guys do
    - I wouldn't make it.

Go from wherever you are to Lake Hodges. Up that to Lake Wohlford. Down to Pauma Valley, take 76

Variation 1: from Lake Wohlford, turn left on Woods Valley and go back to Valley Center, then go
north and take Cole Grade down into the valley, and make a right on 76.

Variation 2: bring your cyclocross bike and go up Nate Harrison Grade

    78. As you leave Ramona going west it becomes 67.

Any 1/3 of which would make a fun/challenging ride for a mere mortal.

Since he asked for "hardest", maybe start this whole thing out by going up Highland Valley at the
    beginning.

Or start at the bottom of 67 in Lakeside, take that to Ramona.
