My hubby had knee surgery in October and was on some pretty strong meds for pain and has had seven rounds with gout flare-ups since that time (less than three months' time now). Normally, he might have two flare-ups in an entire year!
Now, our friend in LA has had the same occurrence with coumadin/fragmin and has had a minor gout flare-up even while on allopurinol.
I am firmly convinced that the powerful medications cause body/blood chemistry changes which allow the uric acid to form causing gout. There's probably not a doctor who would agree with me; however, these two men watch carefully what they eat, and the meds are undoubtedly the culprit.
