I've completed two marathons so far; during the training for my last marathon, I started encountering a reoccurring pain.
The pain starts behind my knee... initially, it was like a hamstring pull and I had to avoid leg curls at the gym. However, the pain has developed further. It starts behind my knee, and I feel it wrap around to below the kneecap on the inside/medial side of my leg. (It is NOT a knee injury.) It hurts the most when I sit for long periods of time and stand up, as well as when I try to completely extend my leg. It's been manageable so far - I was able to complete the last marathon, but I want to keep it from becoming a chronic problem. Any ideas? I am a supinator - I wear cushioned shoes, and I believe that my right foot supinates a little more than my left. The pain is in my left leg.
The gastrocnemius (soleus is the other calf muscle) originates above and behind the knee and inserts into the achilles. If it is tight as suggested in my response to your other post, this is consistent with a sore and tight lower leg. Rest, massage, careful warmup, contract-release stretching, spinning w. toe clips, ...
Massage and yoga and spinning!

Current issue of Runner's World describes 4 kinds of knee pain and their treatment. Yours is type A and is treatable. See issue for full details.
