My current clipless-capable MTB shoes suck major ass. They are too thin in the toe, and the solid sole-plate is pissing me off on stream crossings (I prefer to walk them at this time of year, due to murky, and sometimes deep, water). In addition, the velcro closure method is becoming a PITA. Now that I'm running Mallet Cs, I don't need the stiff sole, and I certainly can do without 100% velcro closure. Who, oh WHO, makes a good, SPD-ready, flexible-soled, lace-up MTB shoe? And, if I were to shop in Portland, OR, would I go to try one of those kinds on?

The "problems" with many low-end shoes are that they-re flexy and lace-up. So you could probably just get some low- budget shoes and you'll be set. Get a decent brand and it might hold up OK.

Seems like none of the bike shops have a huge selection of shoes. Performance would be my first stop, if nothing else just because its less expensive. Bike Gallery is a block away, so an easy second stop. REI in Jantzen Beach has quite a few shoes as well. You can check their brands on- line, but of course they probably won't have all that in stock locally.

I use a Shimano SPD shoe. I don't know what model but it looks just like a hiking shoe you would buy at LLBean and is just as comfortable. It is all nylon with a nice rubber sole. It laces up with a velcro closure at the top which I basically use to keep the laces from coming untied. I think i might have paid $75 for them at my LBS. I have a pair of Sidi Domninators that sit in the closet because of what you said in your post. I love my cheap shoes!
hear hear on the dominators. worst cycling investment I ever made. well, other than the machine tech hub. Those things hurt my feet so bad, I almost threw them away knowing that I would have to ride barefoot. I got new insoles wore them one more time hoping they would break in or something. each ride was worse, not better. too bad, they are well constructed and light, but don't work for my feet worth a damn. I got them when I couldn't find anymore nike poobahs. Now I ride (Hah! I haven't been off road in over a year, only actually ridden 5 or six times during that) some northwaves that look like black high top sneaks. Not as good as the nikes, but way better than the sidis... Try the Northwaves, if they are still available - I haven't been in a bike shop in a while. Anyone in NYC know a shop that actually works on bombers, as opposed to "we'll have to send it out" for a simple spring change?

Nike Poobahs - worst cycling investment ever. Went through three pairs in six months before the shop replaced them for Shimanos.
