Overtraining week before Tri

I think I might have overdone it on the training last week.
On Sunday I felt nauseous and flat. I took Monday off and
did an easy 25min swim on Tuesday (didn't have much
energy), took Wednesday and Thursday off. I still feel a
little tired and nauseous, but not as bad as I felt on
Sunday. I do feel like my legs are rested though. My Sprint
distance race is this coming Monday. Should I rest this
weekend or try to do some light workouts? I realize some of
the nausea might be due to the stress of getting through my
first triathlon. Carlton.

I think your work here is done.

IMHO the most important thing is make sure you get lots of
rest, so worrying won't help.

Next is make sure you are eating properly. Try to only put
anything into your body that will help you on race day ie,
stay off the beer.

Next, if you feel up to it, try to fit in a couple of short
workouts of low intensity, with some short bursts at near
your anticipated race pace, but don't overdo it.

Chances are if you layed down a good base, you will have no
problem finishing. Good luck, and have fun.

i heard some wise words once that said that it is better to
be slightly undertrained than even just slightly
overtrained. i think that in place of the word "slightly",
the speaker used some percentages, but I don't recall them
and I doubt the exact numbers matter that much. the message
is still clear.

better to rest yourself and recover fully and be ready and
keen for the race.

just my two cents,

Cam

You will be fine! Any 'training' that you do at this point
will not help you on Monday and very well might hurt you.
(Better to go into a race 10% undertrained than 10%
overtrained.)

Take Saturday completely off---pretend to be a couch potato
all day. (If you want to, do some mental exercises---
visualize how you want your race to go, mentally stepping
through each event, including transitions. See yourself
succeed in your mind's eye.)

Then on Sunday, do a very short run (under 2 miles) or spin
on a trainer (under 20 minutes) with a few bursts at effort
to wake your leg muscles up a bit.

On Monday, go out and have a great race! (then post a
report!)

Your feelings are pretty normal for most just starting into
triathlon. Relax and don't worry about it. Do keep your
workout short from here to race. You can train right up to a
sprint distance if experienced but if this is your first so
it is not necessary as your goal is not a first place
finish. Keep the work out short, just a good warm-up with
one or two very short bursts to near max effort. That will
keep the cardio/vascular system peaked and ready for race.
Once the start gun goes off you will feel just fine.

I read the same quote yesterday in "Triathlete Magazine" I
think it was Last Months Ironman supplement, and I think
the article was on the last six weeks training leading up
to an ironman.

Now I have to go back and check on the exact quote, but I
believe it was, "Better to be 10% undertrained than 1%
overtrained" Worthwhile advice.
