Hi,
which brand (model?) of helmet is best for an oval head. I understand
that Specialized helmets fit an oval head better than a Giro, and I have
ridden with various Specializeds for years, but still feel that there is
too much gap at the sides of my head.

Bell (even though, IIRC, Bell owns Giro). I have a similar problem as
yours - for my head, Giros feel loose on the sides, Bells don't.
