I'm seeing oval chainrings used on many race bikes. How much difference would they make for a "bash" bike that gets ridden whenever I'm not racing? I know they're proud of them, probably since they're new...

Non-round chainrings have been around for decades, in various configurations. Some designs sound good, and some riders swear by them. Most riders don't notice much difference either way.
