  1. Xrays showed no problem, and I had one session with a therapist who
showed me some itb stretches. Later that day, my pain was noticebly
worse, and I recalled that the Orthopedist indicated the problem
*might* be ITB OR the tendons connecting the gluts to that knob on the
outer portion of the hip. Actually, I am not at all impressed with
either the Doc or the Therapist, as far as trying to find out WHAT is
causing the pain. I have been active for the last 4 years with a
moderate but regular exercise program, consisting of a 2-mile walk in
30 minutes on a 5 degree incline on a treadmill, and various moderate
weight workouts. I never had a problem with my legs or hips. Because
of my age (62), I decided last July to cut back on my half squats from
150 lbs (my weight is 145 lbs) to around 100, but, when I got down to
120 one day on about my 3rd rep I felt a stunning pain in my right
outer hip (where the knob is, NOT the joint itself). I had to lay off
for 2 weeks and, after that, when I did nothing but my walk, my
hip-knob got inflamed and painful and I had to lay off for a whole
month. It has been like that since - if I lay off, then after a week or
so the pain goes away, but, if I walk or squat or even do plain
bend-overs (no weight), then I notice that part of my hip flares up
with pain, and it takes about a week for it to completely go away. The
Doc didn't seem to think it was too serious - he suggested I take
Naproxen for the pain and just do the stretching. I am disgusted since
I have lost so much from not being able to have regular vigorous
workouts for the last 4 months - any ideas? The pain seems to be
centered just above the outermost part of the knob and spreads out over
the outer portion of the rump and also towards the tailbone. If I just
lounge around lazybones for a couple of weeks (no workouts), then the
pain all but goes away to where I can't tell that I have a problem,
but, even a moderate attempt to start back causes it too flare up
again. I don't mind taking naproxen for one or two days, but, I just
don't like taking anything for several weeks - just for pain.

Did he get you over that "mommy thing"?

  3. Sounds like tensor fasciitis or perhaps a transverse tear of the tensor
fasci. Google it and see if it matches your symptoms and, if so, follow the
recommendations for exercises and strengthening. If the problem persists
for a month or so (it may take 3 or 4 months for full recovery but you
should see some relief) find a running orthopedist and get his opinion. He
will probably get an MRI if he suspects a tear.

    Good luck,

Bob, a 62 year old tensor fasciitis survivor
