FTP programs (file transfer protocol) simply transfer files from your
machine to a remote machine. In the case of a website this is a
webserver. They tend to look a bit like Windows explorer with a list of
the files on your local machine on one side, and a list of files on the
remote machine on the other. Most of them allow you to drag files from
one machine to the other and vice versa.

So build your site on your local machine then transfer it to the server
using the ftp program. However, bear in mind that some servers may be
case sensitive. The easiest way round this is to keep all filenames as
lower case. I'd avoid spaces too.

I would advise you to download a program called Winscp from www.winscp.net.
It gives you a very nice secure transfer protocol and a windows-type
interface where your local pc is on the left and the remote server on the
right.
