I've started doing my bit to keep the rural hostels open. I'm now
officially a volunteer warden. For years I've been grateful for
hostels being there, and so I decided it was about time I took my
turn.
There are somewhere between 30 and 40 hostels in England and Wales
which are run on a daily basis exclusively by volunteer wardens.
The course this weekend was excellently structured and the
responsibility put upon you is nothting that a little common sense
can't handle.
The way it works is basically thus:
You select a hostel and a 1 week period, manage the place in the
morning and evening. Your own accomodation is free. Accomodation for
your family/friends is also free so long as they fit into your own
allocated accomodation.
And you are free to explore during the day. You are expected to do a
minimum of 1 week per year but there is no upper limit.
