When I was a kid, I used to lie a lot - always thought the truth was too mundane and boring and
nobody would be interested...so I constantly embellished. Ironically, the term "world-class
bullshitter" was not part of my vocabulary at the time.

Early in my work life, I used to lie too. "Hey Pete, how you doin' with task X?" (Geeze, I'm behind
- having this problem or that problem...but I don't want anybody to know that and I'll catch up
tomorrow...) "Yeah! It's going a-ok"...

What I eventually discovered is that I didn't have the brains to keep my stories straight.

Maybe if I were smarter, lying would have worked out for me...but telling it like it is (or just
keeping my mouth shut if it's gonna offend somebody) works best for me: less work, less anxiety...

Also, once some people decide that you're straight-up all the time, that gives you a certain added
value to them.

Travis, I think that in a way you may have lucked out. You are exactly the wrong type of personality
for the military, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I find too many military people to be very
cynical. I'm afraid you might not have enjoyed your stay. It's a tough group. BTW, I would think

don't go to college for a degree in IT. It's easy to be a college bum. You can work the Pell and
state grant systems so that it is not only free, but it pays you to be there. A part time job
working for the university can take care of the rest. By the time you are finished you will have a
marketable degree and all your current troubles will be so far behind you that nobody will care
about them.

Wrong moral dude. Here's a few others you may want to mull over:

1. Not all advice is good
2. Lying is never good
3. Lying to the government rarely has a positive outcome
4. A pending indictment is *not* something you are going to be able to hide from -- in the
military or out
5. Life is full of harsh lessons, make sure you learn from them
6. No one force you to say anything you don't want to say
7. Only you can protect your integrity, and only you can sacrifice it.

Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you, but as a current member of the US military I'm glad the
system worked the way it did. Nothing personal dude, but I don't want people in the military who
lied to get there. There's too much teamwork, trust, live ordanance, and potentially life
threatening activity that's required on a daily basis to overlook lapses in integrity.

Best to look at it as a change of plans rather than a dead end. I truly hope you find something out
about yourself and can move on to more positive things. Good luck, and don't forget to get on the
bike now and then. It helps maintain the sanity.

OTH is the term used for one that didn't get fully indoctrinated in the military. Other Than
Honorable discharge is a misnomer since it can simply mean 'not suited' etc.. I am a 10 year
military person served in desert storm/shield and entered service into special warfare with a
somewhat checkered backround. Didn't stop me from serving 10 good years, and not cynical, as far as
I can tell. In my field the attrition rate was about 80%. Don't sweat it.

Remember what I said about recruiters/salesmen? Do not believe them? Several of us have BTDT. All
you had to do was ask.

Looking forward. Is this discharge a done deal? Did you actually go through the swearing in
ceremony? If not...then there is no 'discharge'. They'll just send you home. And if you did, how did
they find out this dastardly deed after the fact? A 'pending indictment' is not something you could
hide forever. Eventually, the relevant court would have caught up with you.

first of all, I do leave my past in the past, as best as I can. it just seems to catch up and bite
me in the ass though. ;-)

and I would love the chance to prove myself to have changed, but people only look at my past, and

at least the discharge is not permanent. it is only pending the outcome of my pending enditement (I

I tried college, and it didn't agree with me. detecting personalities over the internet is fairly
inaccurate. I believe I will not only do well in the military, but have great success.

hmm, I was sworn into DEP, but not active duty. suppose that makes a difference? as for how they
found out, I have no factual evidence, but I believe it to be related to Special Agent [censored] (he
