An older friend of mine has just been placed on cholesterol 'lowering' drugs, I am assuming statins. I recall reading something about the dangers of these drugs, but I cannot recall the facts. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Sorry, can you comfirm the url: www.thincs.com. It doesn't appear to exist.
Thanks

Statins appear to reduce CV mortality, but they increase cancer mortality by as much. Read about it there.

I use red rice yeast, a natural statin supplement, so I've been following the press on statins. The consensus seems to be that statins are very expensive and the big drug companies make billions off of them so every caution should be taken in examining what you read and who wrote it.
There was an alert on one particular drug that was introduced last year - Rosuvastatin (CRESTOR). I'm not sure how that is going to work out, but I'd avoid that one for sure.
Nevertheless, the drugs work wonderfully and many 'smart' doctors say the drugs could become as popular as the aspirin a day for everyone.
That's why I've included red rice yeast in my supplement list.

Statins also deplete CoQ10, a great anti-oxidant as well as a heart healthy supplement

I am on regular blood tests for another reason entirely but have always had high cholesterol (above 6.5). My doctor suggested that I try Benecol rather than statins as the latter can have undesirable side effects. The results have been amazing - in the last six months, my cholesterol has dropped from 7.0 to 4.5. Benecol (plantols) is sold in European supermarkets either as a margarine or a yoghourt drink and is very pleasant to take.
