I've been *meaning* to do it. But you know how it is, I work out in the
fitness center in my building and the rules prohibit having guests and
anyway I was putting in the hours on the elliptical. . .
But then I saw a flyer from a woman who is a personal trainer and lives in
my co-op complex. So, I called her and we set up an assessment for last
night. Whoa, I definitely found out where my outer limits were. Stairs
were interesting this morning. <g>
The good news was that she said my cardio fitness was exceptional for a
non-athlete/recreational exerciser; she thought my balance and flexibility
were quite good (of course a part of her clientele is among seniors, so I
think that may be a bit relative) and my lower body strength was pretty
good. Where she thought I needed improvement was upper body strength
(those 5 lb dumbbells got heavy pretty quickly) and core muscles.
She proposed that we meet 3x a week for the next 2 weeks and do a quite
demanding program and then see how we go from there. So that's the plan. I
was rather proud of myself, she said so let's schedule to start next
Monday, and I asked if we could start this Friday instead (I'm usually a
procrastinator even about things I want to do). I asked her what exercise
I should be doing on the non-training days and she said that I'd probably
find resting sounded like a pretty good idea.
I'm psyched to start, although I know I'll be regretting it come Sunday
morning. I'm scheduled to go to a week-long swim camp in mid-June and,
while I know there's only so much I can do in a month, I definitely think
doing what I can to get my arms in gear will be a good thing.
