  1. Someone e-mailed me privately for an inquiry on a comment I made about my
mountain board but the return email didn't go through; it's a Mountain
Board Systems model with foot bindings and a hand brake. I do not recommend
that anyone try this. In fact, I strongly advise against it.
Snowboarding, which this emulates, generally does not involve rocks and
tree roots. If you want a big, impressive skateboard with pneumatic tires,
get a carver. If you want a really fast cross-country board, get a
RollsRolls. If you want to accomplish something going downhill (ie
developing a skill in which you can reliably travel anywhere in some not so
improbable post-apocalyptic future) get a mountain bike. But if you want
to get on ESPN2, MBS is your board.

I myself diplomatically borrow-swapped it with a friend for a neat arm-
    powered bike.

I'll stick to sandboarding. I've done that off and on since 1978 on my
old Sims Lonnie Toft board. Now I use one of my old Burton Customs for
this. I only did it once this year though, but I had a blast. There's
one place where I haul butt down the dune and go flying into Lake
Michigan, finally comming to a stop in waist deep water. Since 9/11,
some of the nuclear plant run are now off limits which sucks. Pretty
much go to Warren Dunes State Park now for my summer boarding fix.
